Mumbai’s civic map is getting a significant makeover. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a ward-boundary update to incorporate land reclaimed under two mega infrastructure projects—the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Atal Setu. This move, crucial for electoral and urban planning, aims to reflect the city’s new geography ahead of the anticipated civic elections later this year.
With the Coastal Road and Atal Setu inaugurated in 2024, the BMC’s assessment and election departments are now working to integrate the newly created land parcels into the official ward boundaries. Around 111 hectares reclaimed from the Arabian Sea for the Coastal Road, and a 0.35-hectare stretch linked to Atal Setu, will now formally be included within existing wards.
Officials confirmed that the newly added land stretches will fall under multiple administrative zones. The Coastal Road area affects wards D to G-South, which comprise 13 corporator wards. The integration is part of a larger exercise to update municipal boundaries in line with population density, infrastructure growth, and development planning guidelines, as directed by the state’s urban development department.
The boundary marking process includes physical surveys, superimposing maps on Google Earth, and ground verification. Clear demarcation elements like bridges, water bodies, and railway lines are being used to avoid future confusion. BMC teams are also preparing to handle public objections and suggestions before finalising the ward boundaries by early September.
This update is particularly significant since BMC has been without an elected body for over three years. Elections are likely to be held in October or November 2025. By redrawing ward boundaries to reflect the city’s infrastructural evolution, the corporation aims to ensure more representative governance and accurate voter mapping in a rapidly changing urban landscape.
The redrawing of Mumbai’s civic map marks a key moment in the city’s political and infrastructural development. As new roads reshape Mumbai’s landscape, aligning ward boundaries with these changes ensures better urban governance and electoral fairness. The integration of Coastal Road and Atal Setu into BMC’s official framework is more than a technical move—it’s a step toward adapting the city’s civic systems to its fast-changing physical reality.
