In a strong move to tackle illegal waste disposal in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a fine of ₹90,000 on those responsible for illegally dumping construction debris in Borivali West. The violation was uncovered on an open plot near the Eksar Metro Railway Station, located adjacent to Jhanshi chi Rani Talav.
This crackdown follows an extensive investigation by civic officials from the R Central ward, who identified the unauthorised land-filling activities that had been taking place at the site. The BMC acted swiftly, issuing a notice under Section 354-A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, which addresses illegal dumping, and initiated legal proceedings under both Section 52 and Section 43 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1996. The owner or occupier of the land has been held accountable for the unlawful disposal of construction debris, which has been a growing environmental concern in various parts of the city. To prevent future incidents, the BMC has also taken steps to hold the responsible parties accountable under the Cleanliness and Sanitation Bye-Laws of 2006. The fine serves as a stern reminder to violators about the consequences of such actions.
The BMC has also raised an alert with the traffic police and local authorities, urging them to take strict measures against the vehicles involved in the illegal dumping activities. The potential for vehicle registration cancellations has been highlighted as part of the penalty process to deter offenders from repeating such actions. To further ensure that such illegal practices are stopped in their tracks, the area surrounding the plot is now under continuous surveillance by the BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department. This will help monitor the site more effectively, enabling swift action to prevent any future dumping incidents. With this decisive action, the BMC aims to reinforce its commitment to maintaining cleaner and more sustainable urban spaces while addressing the issue of illegal waste disposal across the city.
