MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come under scrutiny for suspending its demolition operations targeting illegal structures on marshy land and coastal regulation zones in Versova, following the transfer of its former K west ward officer, Prithviraj Chavan. Chavan, during his tenure, oversaw the demolition of seven illegal buildings, some as tall as three floors, before being reassigned to F North ward.
Since Chavan’s departure on June 14, the BMC has struggled to maintain continuity in its enforcement efforts. The new ward officer, Chakrapani Alle, assumed office but subsequently took sanctioned leave, delaying further actions. BMC officials cited challenges in proceeding with demolitions without adequate police protection, which hindered their attempts immediately after Chavan’s transfer. Local residents and activists, including Ashoke Pandit, have criticized the BMC’s handling of the situation, accusing the administration of yielding to political pressures that allegedly protect illegal structures. Pandit highlighted the abrupt timing of Chavan’s transfer, coinciding with planned demolition activities, which were subsequently left unresolved. “The BMC’s decision to transfer the ward officer before ensuring a seamless transition sends a troubling message about its stance on illegal encroachments,” remarked Pandit, emphasizing the implications for governance in areas like Andheri, where enforcement actions are now in limbo.
Moreover, concerns have escalated over the absence of leadership during critical phases of demolition activities, leaving important initiatives unfinished and communities vulnerable to ongoing encroachments. The BMC’s formation of a special vigilance squad has not sufficed to mitigate these concerns, given the interruptions caused by administrative changes and procedural setbacks.
