The ambitious revamp of Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi temple precinct, inaugurated in October 2024, has come to a sudden halt barely a month after work commenced in July. The delay has been attributed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) failure to release funds to the contractor, putting the project’s first phase at risk of missing its crucial Navratri deadline next month.
Phase one of the Rs 25-crore project aims to enhance illumination, realign street layouts, and install compact flower and prasad stalls, among other upgrades. The contractor, citing repeated follow-ups, stated that no purchase order (PO) has been issued, stalling critical works including street lighting, pedestrian flow management, and decorative installations. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 1) confirmed that the funding issue existed but assured that the PO would be issued promptly, allowing work to resume. Civic officials highlighted that the delay is procedural and not due to contractor inefficiency.
The redevelopment initiative forms part of a larger vision to modernise the precinct while preserving its cultural significance. Proposed enhancements include decorative arch entrances, solar-powered lighting, escalators, CCTV installations, and a control room for illumination management. Plans also feature a skywalk linking the temple to the nearby coastal road garden, alongside a renewed pedestrian walkway to improve accessibility and safety. Officials overseeing the project emphasised that the redevelopment will promote sustainable infrastructure, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and smart urban design. These upgrades aim to create a safer, eco-friendly, and visitor-centric precinct, aligning with broader city planning and zero net carbon objectives.
Sources within the civic administration noted that the delay has attracted attention from multiple stakeholders, including the temple trust, which raised concerns over the stalling of work ahead of major festivities. The administration affirmed that corrective measures are underway to ensure timelines are met while adhering to safety and quality standards. Experts in urban infrastructure pointed out that such delays, though common in heritage and high-footfall precincts, underline the need for timely funding and clear procedural frameworks. They argued that proactive engagement between municipal authorities and contractors can prevent disruptions and protect cultural and civic interests.
