BMC Cracks Down on Pothole Neglect by Engineers

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued show-cause notices to two junior engineers for their failure to address pothole issues in their designated areas. The civic administration identified neglect in pothole repairs on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and Bhandup Village, leading to this disciplinary action.

The BMC has tasked junior engineers across 227 electoral wards with the critical responsibility of preventing pothole formation, especially during the monsoon season. Despite these measures, the engineers in question were found to have ignored multiple complaints following the first significant rainfall of the season. An official from the BMC highlighted that the junior engineers neglected their duties, prompting the issuance of show-cause notices. The official reiterated that negligence in addressing potholes will not be tolerated, emphasising the importance of timely and efficient road maintenance.

According to BMC data, between June 1 and June 16, a total of 5,814 potholes were reported throughout Mumbai, including the eastern and western suburbs. Of these, 5,643 potholes have been repaired, with the remaining 171 in progress. Andheri recorded the highest number of potholes at 404, followed by Goregaon with 162. The BMC is responsible for the upkeep of roads, main roads, and expressways in Mumbai, which face deterioration due to heavy rainfall, diverse traffic types, high traffic density, and utility service trenches. The civic body’s proactive measures are crucial to maintaining the city’s infrastructure and ensuring smooth travel for its citizens.

In response to the situation, the BMC issued a stern warning that any further negligence from the engineers would lead to immediate disciplinary action. The engineers have been instructed to regularly inspect roads for potholes and ensure prompt repairs. Following heavy rainfall from 1 am to 7 am on July 8, the BMC emphasised the high likelihood of road erosion and pothole formation. Consequently, the 227 assistant engineers are mandated to inspect their jurisdictions, identify deteriorated patches and potholes, and undertake repairs proactively. Timing is critical, and the municipal corporation has implemented a system to ensure uninterrupted travel for citizens and motorists. The BMC official further directed that every complaint received from citizens, public representatives, media, and social media must be resolved within the stipulated timeframe. Coordination with various municipal departments is essential to prioritise pothole-filling efforts. Engineers are expected to demonstrate urgency in road repair work, ensuring that any identified pothole is filled within 24 hours.

This directive underscores the BMC’s commitment to maintaining Mumbai’s road infrastructure and ensuring the safety and convenience of its residents. The civic body’s stringent measures are a clear indication that negligence will not be overlooked, and timely action will be taken to address any lapses.
