The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken decisive action against a contractor following the emergence of significant defects in a newly cement-concretised road in Aarey Colony.
The BMC has imposed penalties and issued a stern warning of potential blacklisting due to substantial quality issues with the road on Dinkarrao Desai Marg. Following an inspection by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), flaws were observed in the road segment extending from the Western Express Highway to Morarji Nagar. The inspection revealed extensive cracking, surface ageing, and texture degradation in several sections of the cement-concrete road.
In response to these deficiencies, the BMC has mandated stringent measures against both the contractor responsible for the roadwork and the quality monitoring agency tasked with overseeing the project. The contractor has been instructed to rectify the defects at their own expense, including the reconstruction of cracked and aged sections. Failure to adhere to the required quality standards has led to the contractor being warned of severe repercussions, including blacklisting if issues persist.
The Roads and Traffic Department of the BMC, which spearheaded the cement-concretisation project, has emphasised that future violations will result in double penalties. A third instance of substandard work could lead to the contractor being barred from participating in any future BMC projects. The contract stipulates that the quality monitoring agency is responsible for ensuring the contractor meets quality standards. Consequently, both the contractor and the quality monitoring agency will face scrutiny and potential penalties if quality issues are detected.
Additionally, the concerned engineers have received written warnings to enhance vigilance and ensure that future work meets the expected standards. Additional Municipal Commissioner reaffirmed the BMC’s commitment to upholding the highest standards in municipal roadworks. “We will not tolerate poor-quality work under any circumstances. Both the contractor and the quality monitoring agency are held accountable for ensuring the integrity of road projects. Engineers have also been instructed to be more vigilant to prevent any future deficiencies,” he stated.
