Mumbai’s Badhwar Park seashore redevelopment, long delayed due to financial and administrative hurdles, is finally set to move forward following a fresh allocation of funds by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The decision reaffirms the civic body’s commitment to enhancing public spaces, while countering recent claims that the project had been shelved. Local stakeholders, including the fishing community, are expected to benefit from renewed activity in the area.
Officials explained that the project was stalled primarily because funds sanctioned in 2022–23 were not utilised before the financial year ended, compounded by procedural delays and the blacklisting of the appointed contractor. Additionally, no budgetary provision was made in 2023–24, further halting progress. With the latest financial allocation now in place, the BMC plans to resume work, bringing clarity to citizens and stakeholders awaiting improvements. The redevelopment will cover plaza enhancement, road and stone paving, seating arrangements, electric pole installations, and other ancillary works. While features such as boat parking facilities, landscaped gardens, and decorative projections were not part of the original proposal, officials emphasised that any inclusion will depend on consultant recommendations, regulatory approvals, and available funds. The tender process was initiated in November 2022, and the lowest bidder was appointed for execution.
Local representatives had recently raised concerns about project continuity, citing potential delays and community unrest if work was cancelled. A civic official clarified that unauthorised structures were removed in collaboration with the district collector, and boats were temporarily relocated with support from the local fishing community, allowing the project to move forward without disruption. Urban planners suggest that resuming the Badhwar Park redevelopment aligns with broader city objectives of sustainable and inclusive urban spaces. Public amenities like seating, pathways, and improved lighting contribute to equitable access, while careful planning around environmental considerations ensures minimal ecological impact on the coastal area.
“The resumption of this project demonstrates the BMC’s ability to reconcile administrative delays with civic priorities,” an official said. Experts noted that timely execution and transparency will be critical in ensuring that the redevelopment meets both community expectations and sustainability standards. As Mumbai continues to prioritise open spaces and coastal beautification, the Badhwar Park project represents a tangible step towards inclusive urban development, offering residents and visitors improved infrastructure while preserving local livelihoods and ecological balance.
