In response to escalating complaints from residents of Bandra, Andheri, and Kandivali regarding uncleared silt from drains, BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani has issued a stern directive to his staff.
During a review meeting on Tuesday, Gagrani mandated an acceleration of pre-monsoon drain cleaning operations, instructing civic personnel to deploy additional machinery and manpower to expedite the removal of silt. Despite numerous complaints, residents allege that the silt, which is both unsightly and a breeding ground for flies, remains uncleared. The civic officials, they claim, have cited preoccupation with poll duties as a reason for the delay.
Bandra residents have been particularly vocal, with grievances reported from St John the Baptist Road, Perry Road, and the vicinity of Mehboob Studio. Lillian Pais, a Bandra resident and member of NGO Agni, highlighted that while authorities typically collect silt after it has dried out, this year’s intense heat has caused the silt to dry more quickly, necessitating prompt removal. Former Bandra corporator Asif Zakaria echoed these sentiments, criticising the lack of attention due to officials being diverted by election responsibilities. In the meeting, stormwater drain department officials documented the affected locations and assured that ward officials would be directed to prioritise the silt clearance. Gagrani has specifically instructed deputy commissioners and ward officers to personally inspect the desilting work.
The directive comes with a clear deadline: all desilting work must be completed by 5th June, in collaboration with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and railway authorities. This initiative aims to pre-emptively tackle water drainage issues by concentrating on areas prone to water accumulation. The urgency of this operation underscores the critical need for effective pre-monsoon preparations to mitigate flooding risks and ensure smooth water drainage. The civic chief emphasised the importance of proactive measures, aiming to bolster the city’s resilience against the impending monsoon season.
In addressing the citizens’ concerns, this expedited desilting drive reflects a responsive and accountable approach by the BMC, recognising the significance of maintaining urban infrastructure and public health. With the monsoon fast approaching, the timely and efficient execution of these directives will be pivotal in averting potential waterlogging crises and maintaining civic hygiene standards.
