In a strategic move aimed at enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure and public spaces, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled an ambitious plan for the development of approximately 70 hectares of public open spaces along the impending Coastal Road. The sprawling green spaces will extend from Priyadarshini Park on Nepeansea Road, where the Coastal Road tunnels emerge from Marine Drive, to the Worli endpoint, where the Coastal Road seamlessly connects to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link via a dedicated bridge. The BMC is gearing up to initiate the tendering process for the landscaping project, anticipated to incur an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore. The tendering phase is slated to commence in June, with construction scheduled to kick off post-monsoon. The projected completion date for this transformative endeavour is tentatively set for the end of 2025.
The comprehensive plans encompass the integration of Coastal Road’s continuous 7.5km promenade, stretching from Breach Candy to Worli, with the existing Worli promenade. The expansive open spaces will be segmented into three distinctive zones: Green Shore, Nature Cove, and Park Line, each meticulously designed to serve diverse recreational purposes (refer to the graphic for a detailed layout). In a strategic approach reminiscent of the successful execution of carriageway construction, BMC is contemplating the appointment of separate contractors for each zone. This parallel execution methodology, previously employed in the road construction phase, demonstrated notable efficiency by accelerating the overall pace of the project, according to a BMC official.
The initiative marks a significant step toward transforming Mumbai’s coastline into a vibrant and accessible public space, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The impending tendering process is expected to draw the attention of leading construction firms eager to contribute to this landmark project. As Mumbai anticipates a remarkable metamorphosis along its iconic waterfront, this visionary project aligns seamlessly with the city’s aspirations for a dynamic and modern urban landscape.
