The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cancelled the planned 13-hour water supply shutdown scheduled for today, May 28.
The decision was made in response to adverse weather conditions and a forecast predicting rainfall, which could have complicated the scheduled maintenance work. The water cut was initially planned from 9:45 AM to 10:45 PM to facilitate the commissioning of a new pressure surge control tank at Phase 1 of the Panjrapur water supply station. This infrastructure upgrade was part of BMC’s broader plan to enhance water distribution efficiency across the city. However, considering the unpredictable weather, civic authorities chose to postpone the project to avoid complications, ensuring uninterrupted water supply in major city areas and eastern suburbs.
While the 13-hour cut has been called off, residents in the ‘E’ ward — covering areas like Byculla and Nagpada — will still face a complete 24-hour water shutdown starting 10 AM on May 28 until 10 AM on May 29. This is due to another essential infrastructure project being carried out by BMC in South and Central Mumbai. The ongoing work involves decommissioning a 1200 mm diameter water pipeline at Navnagar and Dockyard Road, installation of a new pipeline of the same diameter, and replacement of a 900 mm valve in Compartment 1 of Bhandarwada Reservoir. Areas expected to be impacted include Colaba, Fort, Mohammad Ali Road, Dongri, Byculla, and Nagpada.
The BMC has urged residents in these zones to store adequate water and use it judiciously during the affected period. This staggered approach by the civic body aims to balance infrastructure upgrades with minimal public inconvenience, even as the city gears up for the onset of the monsoon season. In light of the recent developments, the BMC’s proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the city’s water supply remains unaffected by unforeseen weather conditions. The cancellation of the 13-hour water cut reflects a responsive approach to the challenges posed by Mumbai’s dynamic climate.
Residents are advised to stay informed about future water supply schedules and cooperate with the BMC to facilitate necessary infrastructure improvements while minimizing disruptions to daily life.
