BMC Begins Kandivali Demolitions For Magathane Goregaon 120 Feet Development Plan Road

Mumbai’s urban development agenda received a push this week as the city’s civic body began demolishing unauthorised residential structures in Kandivali’s Singh Estate to make way for the long-awaited 120-foot Development Plan (DP) road connecting Magathane and Goregaon. Officials confirmed that the relocation of 47 project-affected persons (PAPs) has already been initiated, with further housing allotments in progress under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).

The demolition marks a decisive move after months of delay following a court petition and a series of civic discussions. While the state leadership had earlier suggested realigning the proposed DP road to save slum structures, technical experts within the municipal administration rejected the possibility, citing that most sections of the road had already been executed. The decision reflects the civic body’s stance on maintaining continuity in large-scale infrastructure projects that are crucial for easing east–west connectivity in the city. The relocation process began with a lottery system that allotted new residences to 47 PAPs in Kandivali (E), following approval of housing units under an SRA project. Officials indicated that demolition of illegal structures in Singh Estate is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. Proposals for resettling an additional 120 PAPs in Kandivali and 38 in Lokhandwala Township have been submitted to the SRA and are awaiting final approvals. Once sanctioned, further lotteries will be held to ensure fair relocation.

Officials emphasised that the demolition process is being conducted in phases to minimise disruption to affected families. Civic engineers noted that the road project, first conceived years ago, has been delayed due to encroachments, litigation, and the complexities of resettlement. The latest round of action indicates renewed urgency, with the project now projected to be ready by early 2026. Urban planning experts have pointed out that the Magathane–Goregaon DP road will play a vital role in reducing traffic congestion by providing an alternative east–west corridor, particularly during peak hours. The new link road is also expected to improve accessibility to growing residential pockets in western suburbs, thus strengthening the case for balanced infrastructure development.

Residents’ groups have been closely monitoring the process, highlighting the need for both speed and sensitivity in execution. While welcoming the progress, civic activists have stressed that rehabilitation must remain a central priority, as families uprooted from long-standing homes require proper resettlement to maintain community cohesion. As demolition activity proceeds in Kandivali, the civic body has indicated its intent to push forward with the project in a time-bound manner. The challenge, however, remains in balancing urban expansion with the rights of project-affected residents—a test that will determine the city’s ability to build equitable and sustainable infrastructure.
