BMC Announces Record ₹744.27 Billion Budget for 2025-26

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s wealthiest civic body, has unveiled its largest-ever budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, amounting to a remarkable ₹744.27 billion. This marks a 14.19% increase from the ₹651.8 billion allocated for 2024-25, underscoring BMC’s ambitious vision for Mumbai’s development in the coming years.

The budget was presented by the additional municipal commissioners to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani at the civic headquarters, marking a milestone in the city’s fiscal planning. This is the third consecutive year the budget has been presented to an administrator, following the end of corporators’ terms in March 2022. The shift has been a key point of discussion, as the civic body continues its administrative restructuring. Despite this, the budget remains a key instrument for shaping Mumbai’s infrastructure and urban planning, with significant allocations aimed at enhancing the city’s development. For the current financial year, the BMC revised its revenue projections for 2024-25, initially set at ₹357.49 billion, to ₹406.93 billion — a 13.83% increase. By December 31, 2024, the BMC had already collected ₹283.08 billion in revenue. Looking ahead, the projected revenue income for 2025-26 is expected to reach ₹431.59 billion, reflecting a robust 20.73% rise from the revised figures of the previous year.

The substantial hike in this year’s budget is a reflection of Mumbai’s growing economic activity and the BMC’s ongoing efforts to address the city’s infrastructure challenges. A significant portion of the funds will be directed toward projects that aim to modernise urban infrastructure, upgrade public services, and improve the overall quality of life for the city’s residents. This includes expanding public transportation systems, upgrading healthcare facilities, and addressing the housing crisis. As Mumbai’s economic engine continues to hum, BMC’s record-setting budget signals a strategic focus on sustainable growth and a more equitable future. The funding promises a wealth of opportunities for Mumbai’s residents, and as these projects unfold, the city is poised to continue its evolution as one of India’s most important urban centres.
