BMC and CR Coordinate Girder Operation

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has marked a significant milestone in the reconstruction of the historic Carnac Bunder Bridge by successfully shifting a massive 550-metric-ton iron girder to the northern side of the 154-year-old structure. Initially launched on January 26, the operation encountered technical setbacks that stalled progress when only 12 metres of movement remained. However, following strategic coordination with the Central Railway (CR) and securing vital night blocks, the BMC resumed work and completed the complex manoeuvre early Friday morning.

The operation was meticulously executed between 1:30 am and 4:00 am under a special block that temporarily suspended both traffic and power supply. Technical experts from M/s Wrights Ltd oversaw the procedure, following CR-approved plans to ensure precision. A senior civic official detailed that a trial operation on January 14 had successfully moved the girder by 9.30 metres, and a subsequent shift of 58 metres was nearly finalised between January 25 and 26. “Technical difficulties had hindered the last 12 metres, but the combined efforts of our team and CR have now ensured the completion of this critical phase,” the official explained.

With the girder now successfully repositioned, the project will progress to the installation stage once further blocks are granted by the railways. Subsequent tasks will include the construction of piling foundations, concrete laying, and load testing. In tandem, installation of anti-crash barriers and electricity poles will be undertaken concurrently to adhere to the project timeline, which is expected to reach completion by June 2025. The overall reconstruction of the Carnac Bunder Road Over Bridge (ROB), which links Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid Bunder, is estimated to cost approximately Rs. 49 crores.

The project has faced its share of challenges, including delays caused by ongoing work on the Hancock Bridge and issues stemming from encroachments. Nevertheless, the successful shift of the iron girder is a testament to the BMC’s commitment to modernising Mumbai’s ageing infrastructure and improving urban connectivity. As the reconstruction advances, authorities remain optimistic that these concerted efforts will not only enhance commuter safety but also restore a critical transport link within the city.
