Mumbai is set to experience a significant disruption in water supply across parts of its northern suburbs as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertakes critical pipeline maintenance between December 4 and 5. The 18-hour suspension will affect Kandivali and Borivali, including neighbourhoods such as Chikoowadi, Jaun Pada, and Gorai, with local residents urged to store water in advance and manage consumption responsibly.
The BMC stated that two key 900 mm-diameter aqueducts will be connected to establish a new pathway for water flow. “This work is essential to improve long-term distribution efficiency and maintain consistent pressure across these areas,” an official said. Maintenance work will commence around 1.30 pm on December 4 and conclude at 7.30 am the following day, during which water supply will be fully halted for affected pockets. Special attention has been drawn to localities such as Thakur Village and Samata Nagar in Kandivali (East), which normally receive water in the evening. Residents in these areas will face a full-day disruption due to the timing of the maintenance. Supply is expected to return to normal by the evening of December 5. Civic authorities emphasised the importance of conserving water during this period, particularly in densely populated residential zones where demand is typically high.
Industry experts note that such infrastructure upgrades are crucial for enhancing urban water resilience. Mumbai’s ageing pipeline network has long faced challenges including leakage, inconsistent pressure, and capacity constraints, which the current maintenance plan aims to address. “Strategic connections between aqueducts create redundancy, ensuring that future supply disruptions can be minimised even during emergencies,” a senior urban planner explained. The BMC has highlighted that temporary inconvenience is a necessary trade-off for long-term water security. By modernising critical segments of the network, the civic body expects reduced leakages, improved service reliability, and enhanced flow to both domestic and commercial users. The project also aligns with broader sustainability objectives, aiming to optimise resource use and prevent wastage across the municipal water system.
Residents have been advised to monitor storage carefully, avoid unnecessary water usage, and report any issues immediately to local authorities. The BMC also plans to conduct follow-up checks to ensure pipelines operate efficiently post-maintenance. Officials reiterated that such proactive measures are part of Mumbai’s strategy to strengthen urban infrastructure while promoting responsible water consumption among citizens.
