The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai’s key business districts, is grappling with escalating traffic congestion, prompting urgent calls for infrastructural reforms. In response to the mounting traffic woes, Mumbai’s Guardian Minister has advocated for an array of measures aimed at alleviating the growing gridlock within this critical area.
In a recent communication addressed to the Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Minister highlighted the deteriorating traffic conditions exacerbated by ongoing Metro construction. The reduction in road width due to the Metro project, combined with the underutilisation of newly developed cycle tracks and gardens, has significantly impacted vehicular movement, the letter stated. The Minister proposed a multifaceted approach to address these issues. Key recommendations include the reconfiguration of bicycle lanes, suggesting their integration back into the main road while relocating the cycle track to an adjacent plot within BKC. This move is aimed at enhancing cyclist safety and freeing up valuable road space for vehicular traffic.
Further, the Minister recommended optimising the placement of barriers used for Metro construction to minimise their footprint on the already congested roads. To improve public transport efficiency, the proposal includes the introduction of dedicated bus services from Bandra station to BKC. This initiative is intended to decrease reliance on taxis and rickshaws, thereby reducing congestion and fare inflation. The letter also drew attention to the imbalanced allocation of road space within BKC. The Bharat Diamond Bourse, for instance, has been allocated 21 metres for footpaths and gardens, while the adjacent four-lane road has only 15 metres.
To expedite traffic management, the Minister suggested widening roads within BKC to ensure the left lane remains open. Additionally, he advocated for the implementation of smart signalling and traffic management systems to optimise vehicle flow. The proposal includes the establishment of a dedicated traffic division under the BKC Police Station to better address the area’s traffic challenges.
