Bihar Uttar Pradesh Ganga Bridge Gets Green Light

A significant infrastructure push is underway in Bihar as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) begins groundwork for a new 3.2 km-long bridge over the Ganga River.

The project, aimed at boosting road connectivity between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, is expected to cost around Rs 368 crore. The proposed bridge will connect Buxar in Bihar with Bharauli in Uttar Pradesh. It will feature 40 pillars—eight positioned mid-river and the remaining 32 on land. The first pillar will rise from the Buxar side (P-1) and the final one (P-40) will end on the Bharauli side. Of the total span, 1.2 km will be constructed west of the existing Veer Kunwar Singh Bridge. An elevated rotary of 2 km is also planned on the Bharauli side, designed to streamline traffic and reduce congestion.

Soil testing is currently underway, with ASC Infratech conducting bore tests up to 170 feet deep. Samples are being sent to New Delhi for analysis, following which final construction approval from the Central Government is awaited. Though announced in the 2024 general budget, the project faced repeated delays due to technical complications and cancellations of tenders. A formal work order was finally issued on January 9, 2025.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to reduce travel time for commuters, ease regional traffic flow, and create local employment. It is also projected to enhance trade movement between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, contributing to economic growth across both states.
