Bihar Unveils Rs 33000 Crore Road Development Plan

Bihar has secured approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for an ambitious ₹33,000 crore road development plan for the financial year 2025–26.

The announcement was made by Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, Nitin Naveen, during a press conference on Thursday. The plan aims to enhance the state’s road infrastructure, improve connectivity, and stimulate economic growth.

The Road Construction Department has already prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for projects valued at ₹18,000–₹19,000 crore. Work on these projects is expected to commence once formal approval is received from the Centre, likely before August 15. Minister Naveen mentioned that discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have led to consensus on the alignment of expressways and the broader framework of the state’s annual road action plan.

Under this plan, ₹19,981 crore will be allocated for upgrading 526 km of roads into two-lane and four-lane highways. Eight major road projects are included, such as Dhaka Mor to Beljhar, Vikramshila Approach Road, Mashrakh–Chakia–Bhittha Mor Road, Bettiah to Baghaha, Arwal to Bihar Sharif, Naubatpur Bazaar Road, and Bariyarpur to Bishunpur Road.

Additionally, approval has been granted for the construction of seven new bypasses—Dumraon, Arwal, Daudnagar, Aurangabad, VTR, Singheshwar, and Samastipur—spanning a total of 74 km, with an estimated cost of ₹6,040 crore. Further, 227 km of new two-lane roads will be constructed at a cost of ₹1,597 crore.

A significant highlight of the plan is the approval of a four-lane elevated corridor between Anisabad and AIIMS in Patna, spanning 10 km and costing ₹1,308 crore. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

A total allocation of ₹3,758 crore has been made for bridge construction, including ₹2,085 crore for 19 railway overbridges (ROBs). This initiative is part of the Setu Bharatam project, which aims to make all national highways free of railway crossings by constructing ROBs and replacing dilapidated bridges. The project is expected to enhance road safety and reduce accidents at level crossings.

The Bihar government has also approved rural road projects worth over ₹17,000 crore, covering 11,251 roads with a total length of 19,876 km. These projects aim to improve connectivity in rural areas and support economic development.

These developments are expected to transform Bihar’s road infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and stimulate economic growth in the state.
