Bihar South India Rail Link Expands With New Service
A new long-distance train linking the India–Nepal border town of Raxaul with Tirupati in southern India is being positioned as a significant step in strengthening cross-regional connectivity. The proposed Raxaul Tirupati Express is expected to improve direct rail access between northern Bihar and one of the country’s most important pilgrimage centres while also reducing the need for multiple train changes for long-distance travellers.
Railway announcements in recent months indicate that a special service connecting Charlapalli and Raxaul was extended up to Tirupati for a fixed period in 2025, creating a direct link between the eastern border region and southern India. The train was scheduled to run weekly and pass through major railway hubs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh before reaching Tirupati, a route that railway officials described as particularly beneficial for pilgrims and migrant workers travelling between the two regions. The significance of the Raxaul Tirupati Express goes beyond a single train route. Over the past year, Indian Railways has steadily expanded long-distance services connecting Bihar to southern states, reflecting growing passenger demand from migrant workers, students, and religious travellers. Several recent announcements, including new Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat routes through the state, suggest that railway planners are focusing on strengthening long-distance connectivity rather than only upgrading short-distance commuter networks. Raxaul, located near the Nepal border, plays a particularly strategic role in this expansion. Existing long-distance services such as the Raxaul–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Antyodaya Express already connect the region with western India, while other routes link it to eastern and northern cities.
Expanding services further south could help transform the town into a more important rail gateway for cross-border trade and passenger movement. Urban planners and transport experts say the move reflects a broader shift in how regional rail networks are being designed. Instead of relying mainly on large metropolitan hubs, newer routes are increasingly connecting smaller border towns and tier-2 cities directly with major economic and religious centres. In the case of the Raxaul Tirupati Express, the biggest impact may be felt in smaller towns across north Bihar, where direct rail connectivity to southern India has historically been limited. The development could also have economic implications. Direct long-distance rail links often lead to higher passenger traffic, improved access for small businesses, and stronger movement of labour between regions. For a state like Bihar, where large numbers of workers travel to southern cities for employment, reducing travel time and improving connectivity can directly influence household incomes and local economic activity.
If the service becomes regular rather than seasonal, it could mark an important milestone in improving long-distance mobility between eastern India and the southern corridor. For urban planners, the next challenge will be ensuring that station upgrades and last-mile transport infrastructure keep pace with the growing demand for inter-state travel.
