Bihar’s railway infrastructure is set for a significant upgrade with the announcement of a Rs 350 crore modernisation plan for the historic Jamalpur Railway Workshop.
This initiative aims to enhance the workshop’s capabilities and contribute to the overall development of the state’s railway sector. The Jamalpur Railway Workshop, established in 1862, is one of India’s oldest and most renowned railway workshops. The modernisation plan includes the installation of advanced equipment and the expansion of facilities to increase the workshop’s production capacity. This upgrade is expected to improve the efficiency of wagon overhauls and other critical maintenance operations.
In conjunction with the workshop’s modernisation, the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) in Jamalpur is being transformed into a Centre of Excellence. The initiative focuses on skill development in areas such as welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechatronics. This move aims to equip the workforce with the necessary skills to operate and maintain advanced railway technologies. As part of the modernisation efforts, the Jamalpur Workshop’s wagon overhaul capacity is set to increase from 545 to 800 units per month. This enhancement will enable the workshop to meet the growing demand for efficient maintenance services, ensuring the reliability and safety of the railway network.
The Indian government has allocated a record Rs 10,066 crore for railway development in Bihar for the fiscal year 2025-26. This substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to improving railway infrastructure and services in the state. The funds will support various projects, including the construction of new tracks, station redevelopment, and the implementation of advanced safety systems. The modernisation of the Jamalpur Railway Workshop and the establishment of the IRIMEE Centre of Excellence mark significant milestones in Bihar’s railway development journey. These initiatives are expected to enhance the state’s railway capabilities, improve service delivery, and contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.
