An early surge in summer heat across Bhubaneswar and western districts of Odisha has pushed daytime temperatures past the 40°C threshold for the first time this year, signalling the arrival of an intense pre-summer heat cycle that could test urban infrastructure, public health systems and energy demand across the state.
According to weather observations released by India Meteorological Department, the highest temperature on Friday was recorded in the industrial town of Jharsuguda, where the mercury climbed to 40.6°C. Nearby Hirakud followed closely with temperatures crossing 40°C, while the western belt of the state reported several locations approaching similar levels. The early spike places parts of Odisha among the warmest locations in the country on the day, reflecting the seasonal heat build-up typical of central and eastern India before the arrival of summer thunderstorms. Temperatures also rose sharply in cities across Maharashtra, including the Vidarbha region, highlighting a broader warming trend across interior India. While the capital Bhubaneswar remained relatively moderate with daytime temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius, weather officials have cautioned that the Odisha temperature rise is expected to intensify over the coming days. Forecast models indicate that maximum temperatures across western and interior districts could continue climbing, with the possibility of heatwave conditions in some pockets.
