India Achieves 50 Percent Clean Power Capacity Five Years Ahead of Target
Bhubaneswar is emerging at the forefront of India’s energy transition as the state accelerates its roadmap for sustainable growth under Odisha Vision 2036 and 2047. Central to this transformation is the large-scale adoption of rooftop solar systems, with plans to install over three lakh domestic solar units across the state within the next three years.
The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with key distribution partners and is supported by the central PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The core technology fuelling this effort comes from Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, where India’s largest solar module manufacturing plant is producing advanced, high-efficiency modules. Built by a major private sector player, the facility uses TOPCon and Mono PERC technologies, ensuring long-term durability and consistent performance—both essential for Odisha’s decentralised solar strategy. Odisha’s push aligns with India’s Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) guidelines, which aim to localise the clean energy supply chain and reduce reliance on imports.
State-backed agencies are working with private partners to integrate these modules into community-level rooftop systems, helping the state reduce its fossil fuel footprint while empowering local energy users. To boost adoption at the grassroots, financing has been made accessible with rooftop systems starting at ₹2,499 for a 1kW setup. Awareness campaigns and skill development programmes are running in parallel, ensuring both demand and a capable local workforce. Four regional training centres are being established to upskill around 12,000 youths in installation, operation, and maintenance of solar systems. Officials highlight that Odisha’s integrated model—merging domestic manufacturing, local skill development, and equitable access—is setting the foundation for the state to emerge as a green energy exporter.
By leveraging advanced solar technologies and empowering communities through training and inclusive financing, the state is fostering a decentralised renewable energy ecosystem. Bhubaneswar, in particular, is being spotlighted as a prime example of this transformation. The city’s rapid rooftop solar adoption and grassroots energy participation are reinforcing its position as a frontrunner in India’s sustainable and community-driven urban energy transition.
