Bhubaneswar Expands with New Train Terminal

The Bhubaneswar New Railway Station (BBSN) is undergoing a significant transformation as part of Indian Railways’ push to decentralise urban rail traffic and improve connectivity across Odisha.

In a strategic move, BBSN has now become the originating and terminating hub for three key express trains Konark Express (towards Mumbai), Visakha Express (towards Secunderabad), and the Visakhapatnam Intercity Express marking a major operational shift from the congested main Bhubaneswar station. This re-routing initiative, spearheaded by East Coast Railway (ECoR), aims to ease passenger flow in central Bhubaneswar while extending access to a growing commuter base in North Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Barang. With this redistribution of rail traffic, Indian Railways is not only alleviating congestion at its primary station but also strengthening regional mobility in a rapidly urbanising corridor.

Crucially, this development is backed by the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, under which a sum of ₹250 crore has been allocated to revamp BBSN into a world-class facility. Plans include the construction of a 100-foot-wide access road, enhanced station entry infrastructure from Raghunathpur, commercial development, and the integration of essential passenger amenities such as foot-over bridges and upgraded lighting systems. The project underscores Indian Railways’ renewed focus on sustainable station development, which aligns with its long-term vision of building green and accessible urban transport hubs. The shift also reflects a growing need to rethink urban transit logistics in Odisha’s capital. Bhubaneswar’s rapid population growth, rising urban density, and expanding economic footprint have placed increased demands on its transport systems. With BBSN’s upgrade, railway authorities are looking to create a new urban node—one that is not only modern but environmentally sustainable. Key features under consideration include energy-efficient infrastructure and multi-modal transport integration to reduce dependency on private vehicles and lower the city’s carbon footprint.

For regular passengers, the change is already beginning to reflect positively. Reduced crowding, easier last-mile connectivity, and shorter travel times for those living outside the city core are among the immediate benefits being noticed. Long-term, the shift is expected to catalyse real estate and commercial development in surrounding zones, setting the stage for a more decentralised and balanced urban growth model. The revamp of Bhubaneswar New Station is not just a railway upgrade it is a blueprint for the future of transit-led urban transformation in India. By strategically redistributing train operations and enhancing infrastructure in a less-congested part of the city, Indian Railways is laying the foundation for greener, more inclusive urbanisation. As Odisha continues its journey towards becoming a major economic player in eastern India, sustainable rail connectivity will be a key driver of that growth.
