Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is embarking on a significant journey to elevate its aviation infrastructure with a substantial Rs 1000-crore expansion project at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA). This ambitious undertaking centres on redesigning Terminal 3 (T3) into a fully integrated facility, moving away from an earlier proposal for a dual-terminal system. This strategic shift aims to streamline operations and significantly enhance passenger convenience, marking a pivotal step towards transforming BPIA into a modern, efficient, and sustainable air travel hub capable of handling increasing domestic and international traffic, vital for the region’s economic and social development.
The decision to consolidate arrival and departure functions into a single, expansive 65,000-square-metre integrated T3 is a direct result of extensive consultations with stakeholders. Concerns were raised regarding the logistical complexities and potential inefficiencies inherent in a split-terminal setup. By opting for an integrated model, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) aims to create a seamless passenger experience, minimising transit times and improving operational flow.
