The Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport in Andhra Pradesh is on track to become a pivotal asset in India’s aviation sector, with its ambitious development underway.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, announced on Tuesday that the airport, alongside major developments at Mumbai and Noida, will play a crucial role in transforming India’s aviation infrastructure. The new airport, which will feature the longest runway in the country, promises to provide significant connectivity and economic growth for the region.
The airport’s 3.8 km runway, designed to accommodate the largest aircraft, marks a major milestone in India’s infrastructure development. Currently, the project is progressing rapidly, and Naidu revealed that it is expected to be completed by June 2026. The project’s completion will mark a new chapter in the state’s aviation infrastructure, as it moves towards becoming a major hub for both domestic and international air traffic.
During a site inspection, Naidu was joined by several key officials, including MSME and NRI Empowerment Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, MP Kalisetti Appalanaidu, GVIAL Chairman Karrothu Bangarraju, and Vizianagaram District Collector BR Ambedkar. The team thoroughly reviewed the progress at the terminal, runway, Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, and various other facilities.
Naidu highlighted the significant progress made since the current government took charge. While only 26% of the work was completed under the previous administration, he stated that 71% of the project has now been completed under the guidance of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. Notable achievements include the completion of 97% of the runway work, 92% of the taxiway, and 72% of the ATC tower. Additionally, 60% of the terminal building has been constructed, and ancillary facilities are progressing at a steady pace.
Incorporating both advanced technology and local culture, the airport will feature state-of-the-art systems, aiming to offer seamless connectivity for travellers while reflecting the cultural heritage of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP). This integration of modern infrastructure with cultural elements will make the Bhogapuram Airport not just a transportation hub, but also a beacon of the region’s rich history.
The project also holds significant promise for local development. Plans for a skill development centre at the site are underway, alongside the creation of a detailed project report (DPR) to link the airport with the Mulapeta port and the Visakhapatnam-Raipur highway. This strategic connectivity is expected to further boost the regional economy and facilitate smoother logistics for both passengers and cargo.
The new airport is expected to enhance the economic landscape of the region, driving tourism, trade, and employment opportunities. The growing transport infrastructure will foster the development of ancillary sectors like hospitality and retail, making the region more attractive to global investors.
The completion of the Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport will further bolster India’s standing in the global aviation market. It will not only serve as a crucial link for passengers but also contribute to reducing regional disparities by fostering economic growth in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
This ambitious project aligns with India’s broader vision of expanding its aviation footprint and contributing to the nation’s economic aspirations, as the government continues to focus on building sustainable, forward-looking infrastructure to meet the demands of a rapidly growing economy.
