Bhayanderpada flyover opens in Thane to cut travel time and ease traffic
Thane’s transport infrastructure took a major leap forward with the inauguration of the Bhayanderpada flyover on May 14.
Designed to tackle heavy congestion on Ghodbunder Road, the new 601-metre, four-lane flyover is expected to reduce travel time by up to 30 minutes for daily commuters between Thane and Mumbai. The project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Part of a three-tiered transport corridor—comprising a surface road, the elevated flyover, and the upcoming Metro Line 4 viaduct—the flyover is the first of its kind in Thane. Officials expect it to decongest one of the city’s busiest stretches and improve connectivity to key economic hubs such as Navi Mumbai, JNPT, Vasai-Virar, and Gujarat’s industrial belt. The flyover includes a 391-metre ramp on the Thane side, a 20-metre underpass, and a 189-metre ramp towards Borivali. With a 2+2 lane design, it can handle an estimated 73,000 vehicles daily. A pedestrian underpass has also been built to ensure safe crossings, easing surface-level congestion.
Commuters from Ghodbunder Road, Waghbil, Bhayanderpada, Kasarvadavali, and Thane East are expected to see immediate benefits. With signal-free movement and improved traffic routing, the project is also anticipated to cut fuel consumption and lower emissions—key goals in the city’s sustainable transport strategy. Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA, said the project represents a shift toward integrated urban mobility. “The Bhayanderpada flyover is a significant step in building a safer, more efficient transport network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This initiative not only relieves traffic pressure but also stimulates economic activity,” he said.
Once Metro Line 4 becomes operational, the flyover will offer direct access to multiple stations, encouraging public transit use and easing dependency on private vehicles. As the region braces for the monsoon, the project offers timely relief for thousands of daily travellers.
