The East Coast Railway network is set to receive a crucial boost as officials have approved the construction of a fourth railway line between Ranital Link Cabin and Bhadrak station in Odisha. The 5.06-kilometre addition, sanctioned at an estimated ₹149.32 crore, is expected to reduce bottlenecks along the highly trafficked Howrah–Chennai main corridor. By segregating freight and passenger movement, the initiative aims to significantly enhance the punctuality, capacity, and operational efficiency of train services, particularly in view of growing demand from industrial and port-based logistics.

The proposed stretch is a vital link within one of India’s busiest rail arteries, routinely burdened by congestion due to simultaneous passenger and freight operations. The planned fourth track will facilitate faster clearance of trains, especially towards strategic port destinations like Dhamra and Paradeep. Officials note that the new line will help improve headway times, thereby reducing train delays across the section. The increased track capacity will also prove crucial in handling the anticipated surge in both freight volumes and commuter traffic as Odisha’s regional economy continues to expand. One of the defining features of this upgrade is its emphasis on traffic segregation. By structurally separating freight and coaching operations, the project enables a smoother flow of goods trains without interfering with scheduled passenger services. This operational streamlining is expected to enhance average sectional speeds, contributing to greater energy efficiency and reduced transit time.
