BEST Unveils First Bus Route on Atal Setu

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking is set to launch its first public transport bus service on India’s longest sea link, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as the Atal Setu. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s public transportation network.

The new bus route, designated as S-145, will operate between Konkan Bhavan, Belapur, and the World Trade Centre, passing through key locations such as Sai Sangam, Targhar, Ulwe node, Aai Tarumata, Kamdhenu Oaklands, MTHL, Eastern Freeway, CSMT, Churchgate station, and concluding at Cuffe Parade. This service is in sync with the Chalo app, enhancing convenience for commuters.

Initially, the route will see limited operations, with two services running in the morning from Belapur to the World Trade Centre and two in the evening in the reverse direction. This limited schedule is expected to be expanded based on demand and feedback from commuters.

The Atal Setu, also known as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans-Harbour Link, is a six-lane sea link connecting Mumbai to its satellite city, Navi Mumbai. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, the bridge spans 21.8 km, with 16.5 km over the sea, and has been constructed at a cost of ₹17,840 crore. This engineering marvel significantly reduces travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just 15-20 minutes, compared to several hours previously.

“I am glad to see the Chalo App and BEST Undertaking expanding their reach across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It is a proud moment to witness our public transport body offering a viable option for citizens to travel across India’s longest sea link. I hope to see more such premium and ordinary bus routes on MTHL and other upcoming projects,” said a bus enthusiast, reflecting the positive sentiment among the public.

The introduction of the S-145 route is seen as a strategic move to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion. The route not only offers a quicker commute but also provides a scenic journey across the sea link, potentially attracting more passengers to public transport.

BEST’s initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve urban mobility and infrastructure in Mumbai. As the city continues to grow, such projects are crucial in ensuring efficient and sustainable transport options for its residents. The success of this new route could pave the way for additional services and expanded routes, further integrating Navi Mumbai with Mumbai’s bustling core.

This new development is a testament to BEST’s commitment to enhancing the quality of public transport and adapting to the evolving needs of Mumbai’s commuters. With continuous improvements and strategic expansions, BEST is poised to play a pivotal role in the city’s transportation landscape.
