A sudden and intense downpour severely impacted Bengaluru, causing major traffic disruptions and flooding across numerous areas, particularly in the eastern parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department reported a significant rainfall, with Bengaluru receiving 26.8 mm of rain and the HAL observatory recording 35.6 mm by the evening.
This unexpected rainfall led to substantial waterlogging, significantly hampering movement throughout the city. The Outer Ring Road, a crucial thoroughfare in Bengaluru’s eastern region, was particularly affected. Waterlogging was reported at multiple points along this route, including Silk Board Junction, Marathahalli Junction, and Karthik Nagar. Other severely impacted areas included the service road near Kariyamana Agrahara, Kasturi Nagar, Veerannapalya, Salem Bridge, and the Lowry Underpass. Among the worst-hit locations was the Panathur Underbridge, where vehicles and pedestrians had to navigate through water depths of 1 to 1.5 feet, illustrating the scale of the flooding.
Further complications arose on major flyovers and roadways, with the Hebbal flyover ramps towards Kempegowda International Airport and several other key roads, including Anil Kumble Circle, Vibgyor Road, and Balagere, experiencing significant flooding. Areas such as Kadubeesanahalli, Bellandur Kodi, and SJP Road towards Town Hall also faced severe waterlogging, exacerbating the city’s traffic woes. The sudden rainfall has highlighted the pressing need for improved drainage infrastructure and emergency response strategies to mitigate such disruptions in the future.
