Bengaluru Union Minister Gadkari Launches ₹2,042 Crore Karnataka Highway Projects

Karnataka is set to witness a transformative leap in its highway infrastructure with the launch of development projects worth ₹2,041 crore, announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. These strategic initiatives are designed to significantly enhance transportation efficiency, stimulate economic growth, and bolster tourism, while crucially strengthening rural-urban connectivity across the state. The projects align with a broader national vision for sustainable infrastructure that supports eco-friendly development and equitable access to opportunities.

The comprehensive package of newly announced projects spans 88 kilometres across key districts including Shivamogga, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Bidar, and coastal Karnataka. A significant focus is on the construction of vital road overbridges and river bridges, such as those over the Shahabad and Kagina rivers on NH-50. These improvements are expected to streamline freight and passenger movement, particularly in North Karnataka, reducing travel times and operational costs for businesses, thereby contributing to a more efficient and less carbon-intensive logistics network.

A notable component is the widening project on NH-367 between Bidar and Humnabad, which will substantially strengthen industrial transport links connecting Bidar and Kalaburagi. This enhanced connectivity is crucial for fostering seamless regional trade and supporting the growth of industrial clusters. By improving the flow of goods, these highways will reduce idling time for vehicles and optimise supply chains, leading to a decrease in fuel consumption and associated emissions, directly contributing to the state’s zero-net-carbon goals.

Beyond economic and environmental benefits, the highway upgrades are poised to significantly boost religious tourism by improving access to popular sites like Kollur Mookambika Temple and Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple. This increased accessibility is expected to revitalise local economies, benefiting hotels, transport operators, and small businesses in surrounding areas. Furthermore, enhanced road links between Malenadu, coastal Karnataka, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Bengaluru, and Mysuru will encourage balanced development, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, promoting equitable growth across the state.

These highway projects are integral to the ambitious PM Gati Shakti initiative, which underpins Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a $5 trillion economy. The central government’s substantial investment in South India’s infrastructure, particularly in Karnataka, underscores a strategic commitment to building resilient and integrated transport networks. Key inaugurations include a 2.44-kilometre cable-stayed bridge connecting Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli villages in Shivamogga, built at a cost of ₹473 crore, and the Sharavati Bridge, which significantly improves Malenadu-coastal Karnataka connectivity.

The proximity to these upgraded highways is anticipated to significantly boost property values, potentially transforming the economic fortunes of farmers and property owners along these corridors. The improved road access will not only reduce travel time but also lower logistics costs, enhancing trade and agricultural supply chains. As demonstrated by the economic benefits already realised from the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, these ongoing projects are expected to replicate that success statewide, ensuring that both urban and rural communities thrive in a sustainably developed environment.
