Bengaluru to Get 300 km of New Roads

The Karnataka state government has allocated a substantial Rs 4.9 lakh crore budget for 2025, with a particular focus on improving Bengaluru’s infrastructure and addressing long-standing urban challenges. Among the most notable initiatives is the construction of 300 km of new roads along canal buffer zones in Bengaluru, backed by an investment of Rs 3,000 crore. This initiative aims to decongest the city, providing smoother connectivity while preserving its natural water bodies.

The development of a comprehensive road network in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area, covering both arterial and sub-arterial roads over 460 km, is set to begin, with an allocation of Rs 660 crore. This move is part of the city’s larger urban planning strategy, which aims to make Bengaluru more pedestrian-friendly, sustainable, and efficient in its urban transport network.

Amid frequent flooding and sewage overflow issues, the budget also prioritises the creation of a robust drainage system, with a financial boost of Rs 3,000 crore to the BBMP and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). These funds will be used to build a systematic drainage network and sewage treatment plants (STPs), addressing the growing concerns over climate change-induced urban flooding. Moreover, the development of Varthur and Bellandur lakes continues to progress with ongoing silt clearing efforts, while Rs 234 crore has been earmarked for these lakes.

The government has also allocated Rs 35 crore for the “Brand Bengaluru Green Bengaluru” initiative, aiming to enhance the city’s green cover and biodiversity. The budget also includes provisions for the healthcare sector, with a Rs 413 crore ‘Comprehensive Health Programme’ aimed at improving health infrastructure, particularly in the face of Bengaluru’s rapidly growing population.

These bold steps reflect the Karnataka government’s commitment to transforming Bengaluru into a more sustainable, climate-resilient, and well-connected metropolis while tackling the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation.
