The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) is embarking on a transformative journey towards sustainability by embracing eco-friendly initiatives for all 58 stations under construction.
Led by Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), the project aims to integrate green features into station design and construction, with a focus on achieving Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) certification. In a significant move towards reducing its carbon footprint, K-RIDE is striving for IGBC platinum ratings for the stations, symbolising excellence in sustainable infrastructure. The design incorporates various measures to enhance accessibility and eco-friendliness, ensuring a harmonious blend of functionality and environmental consciousness. Key among the eco-friendly initiatives is the utilisation of solar energy, with rooftop solar panels covering the surfaces of stations. Additionally, experiments with photovoltaic rooftops are underway in certain stations and Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), aimed at maximising solar energy harnessing while minimising space requirements.
The construction of green buildings under IGBC certification is poised to deliver substantial benefits from day one of occupancy. These include significant reductions in water and energy consumption, with potential energy savings ranging from 20% to 30% and water savings from 30% to 50%. Furthermore, green buildings offer intangible benefits such as improved air quality, enhanced daylighting, and better overall health and well-being of occupants. Water conservation forms a crucial aspect of the sustainability drive, with stations equipped with rooftop rainwater harvesting facilities and Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) at major stations. Treated water will be utilised for tertiary needs, thereby reducing dependence on freshwater sources. Additionally, rainwater harvesting through the viaduct will be implemented, similar to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), further augmenting water conservation efforts.
In addition to water-saving techniques, K-RIDE is also pioneering green construction practices by incorporating eco-friendly materials such as green concrete, which utilises a mix of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris and concrete. This approach not only contributes to a circular economy but also effectively manages C&D waste. Furthermore, eco-friendly paint will be used for painting the stations, aligning with the project’s commitment to sustainability. Amidst these commendable efforts towards sustainable infrastructure, challenges related to interoperability between Bengaluru’s rail networks have surfaced.
