In Bengaluru, a brief spell of rain on Friday evening caused significant disruption across parts of the city, particularly in South Bengaluru, leading to flooding and traffic standstills. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall for Saturday, indicating continued wet conditions for the Karnataka capital.
The short downpour, which recorded an average of 6.6 mm across the city, triggered immediate traffic snarls in key areas, notably where civic infrastructure works are currently underway. Despite the noticeable impact, officials from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) maintained that there were no major issues, asserting that the heaviest rainfall was largely confined to South Bengaluru and its surrounding localities.
Data from the Varunamithra app, managed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), revealed varied rainfall intensities across the city by 5:30 PM on Friday. Vidyapeeta recorded the highest with 33 mm, followed by Nayandahalli with 19 mm, Bommanahalli at 18 mm, Doddabidarakallu at 17.5 mm, and Pattabhiramanagar with 13.5 mm. Several roads experienced brief inundation, and stormwater drains saw a notable rise in water levels.
Bengaluru currently possesses an 860 km stormwater drain network, with BBMP having completed lining work on 491 km and another 125 km actively under construction. To mitigate persistent flooding, a World Bank-backed rejuvenation project has been launched to revamp the remaining 173.9 km of the drainage network. BBMP officials anticipate this project, aimed at making Bengaluru flood-resilient, will be completed within the next three years.
