Bengaluru Sky Deck to Rise at Kengeri Layout

Bengaluru’s skyline is poised for a dramatic transformation as the state government confirms that a 250-metre sky deck will be constructed in the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout in Kengeri.

Set to be one of the tallest urban landmarks in the region, the tower will occupy a 25-acre parcel owned by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), and is being positioned as a future-facing tourism and civic icon. The decision follows months of site reviews and regulatory clearance rounds, especially after the initially proposed site at Hemmigepura was ruled out due to aviation safety restrictions that prohibit high-rise structures within a 20-kilometre radius of Kempegowda International Airport. Legal hurdles, including land acquisition complexities linked to the NICE corridor, further reinforced the shift to the Kengeri site.

Planners believe the elevated structure—once completed—will not only redefine the city’s urban silhouette but also serve as a public viewing deck offering panoramic vistas of Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding built environment. Designed to attract both domestic and international visitors, the tower is expected to act as an urban magnet, potentially catalysing economic activity in the underutilised western periphery of the city.In parallel, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has indicated that the long-delayed Bengaluru tunnel road project is entering an actionable phase. Addressing media over the weekend, he stated that the state will soon invite tenders for the tunnel’s first phase, which involves a single-tube corridor. This phase will focus on strategically planned entry and exit points to maximise impact and avoid sensitive zones like Vidhana Soudha, which were ruled out on heritage and security grounds.

These projects form a crucial part of the city’s broader urban mobility strategy. Alongside the tunnel road, the state is pushing forward with a proposed 114-km elevated corridor that is designed to streamline connectivity from the city’s central districts to the Kempegowda International Airport. This infrastructure is especially significant in easing chronic congestion and supporting economic decentralisation by linking emerging residential and commercial clusters. While these developments promise to transform Bengaluru’s urban fabric, their real success will depend on sustainable integration—prioritising pedestrian access, last-mile connectivity, green building norms, and equitable land use. Civic planners have underlined the importance of minimising displacement, incorporating climate resilience features, and ensuring that the benefits of such megaprojects do not bypass lower-income and vulnerable communities.

With the Kengeri sky deck and urban tunnels leading the charge, Bengaluru is carving a path toward an urban identity that blends ambition with accountability. As the city pushes its vertical and subterranean boundaries, the focus must remain on inclusive design that enhances liveability for all.
