Bengaluru Mumbai To Get New Superfast Train After Thirty Years
Bengaluru and Mumbai are set to be connected by a new superfast train, ending a three-decade-long wait for faster rail travel between the two key economic hubs. Officials confirmed that preparations for the launch are underway, with a formal announcement expected in the coming weeks. The development is expected to provide commuters with a reliable and efficient alternative to air and road transport.
For the past 40 years, the Udyan Express has been the primary train linking Bengaluru and Mumbai, covering the 1,100-kilometre distance in nearly 24 hours with over 30 stops. The lengthy journey forced many passengers, including business travellers, to rely on flights and buses, which are often costlier. The introduction of a new superfast service is anticipated to reduce travel time to approximately 14–15 hours, offering a competitive option for both regular commuters and occasional travellers.
Railway officials highlighted that the new service will comply with the criteria for ‘superfast’ classification, maintaining an average speed of at least 55 km/h. The enhanced train service also leverages recently added track capacity at Bengaluru and Mumbai stations, enabling more frequent and faster services along this heavily trafficked corridor.
Experts emphasised that this move is not only a convenience for passengers but also a strategic economic boost. Bengaluru, known as India’s IT and start-up capital, and Mumbai, the financial powerhouse, witness substantial inter-city business travel. Faster rail connectivity is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, and smoother logistics for corporate travel, contributing to overall economic productivity.Public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with passenger associations and trade representatives welcoming the initiative as a necessary step in modernising India’s rail network.
