Bengaluru’s airport corridor, long plagued by severe traffic congestion, may soon see a transformative overhaul. During a comprehensive meeting on Wednesday, 13th November, the Revenue Minister discussed with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Bengaluru’s traffic police, proposing several key infrastructure upgrades. These improvements aim to decongest the critical routes connecting the city to its international airport, offering daily commuters relief from prolonged traffic delays. The discussions included potential expansions and redesigns to streamline the busy route’s traffic flow and improve commuter experience.
One of the most significant proposals is to widen the stretch near the military land, an area notorious for bottlenecks. NHAI has committed to constructing a dedicated service road extending from the Hebbal flyover to the military land area, while the Hebbal stormwater drain bridge will undergo widening to better handle traffic surges. In addition, enhanced bus bays will be introduced, specifically at the Military Farm bus stop, enabling larger volumes of buses to halt efficiently without disrupting other vehicles. These adjustments are expected to ease congestion along critical points and improve accessibility for those relying on public transport.
Further improvements will focus on bottlenecks near Jakkur Aerodrome, where a service road will stretch from the Yelahanka signal to Jakkur junction. Plans are also in motion for a dedicated entry and exit point near the Coffee Day outlet along the Yelahanka bypass, a notable area of high traffic volume. Proposals under consideration include new access points at Palanahalli, between Yelahanka and Bagalur Cross, addressing commuter demand for smoother transitions between city routes. Additionally, the minister hinted at the possibility of adding U-turns at specific locations under the NH elevated road, which may facilitate better traffic flow without adding undue travel distances for commuters.
The long-term strategy involves constructing underpasses at Kodigehalli, Byatarayanapura, and Jakkur junctions, with the goal of creating a more sustainable traffic network. These proposed underpasses are designed to reduce reliance on surface-level roads, thereby addressing both congestion and pollution issues on one of the city’s busiest corridors. Sustainability remains a core focus, with these infrastructure changes aimed at supporting long-term urban planning needs, minimising environmental impact, and accommodating Bengaluru’s rapid population growth. These strategic upgrades demonstrate a commitment to addressing the city’s mounting civic and transportation challenges, positioning the city for sustainable growth and improved liveability in the future.
By integrating these measures, the Bengaluru Airport Road project hopes to set a benchmark in urban infrastructure planning, balancing modernisation with commuter convenience and environmental stewardship.
