Bengaluru Metro Revises Fare Hike Amid Public Backlash
Reduced Fares Bring Partial Relief, But Commuters Remain Skeptical
In response to intense public criticism, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has revised its recent fare hike, reducing the increase by 29%. The decision came after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah termed the previous hike as “abnormal” and directed a rollback. While many commuters welcomed the revision, confusion persists over the actual impact, as not all fare reductions have been uniform. The maximum stage-wise fare hike has now been capped at 71%, yet the base fare remains unchanged at ₹10, and the highest fare still stands at ₹90. The fare recalibration follows reports of technical errors in calculations, which had led to sudden cost escalations for daily passengers.
Commuters React as Metro Fares See Mixed Adjustments
Following the revision, several commuters noticed a reduction of ₹9 to ₹10 on their usual metro routes. Prakash Naik, a regular passenger, expressed relief after his fare from Kadugodi Tree Park to Satya Sai Hospital returned to ₹10 from the previously inflated ₹20. However, other commuters remain unconvinced, citing instances where fares have increased rather than decreased. Bharath Kumar, another commuter, pointed out discrepancies, highlighting that his travel cost from R.V. Road to Trinity had initially risen from ₹33.25 to ₹57 and had now increased further to ₹60 despite the announced reduction. Such inconsistencies have led to frustration among passengers, raising concerns over the lack of transparency in the fare adjustment process.

The fare controversy has reignited discussions on the sustainability of Bengaluru’s public transport. While metro expansion is crucial for reducing vehicular congestion and lowering emissions, the affordability of the service remains a critical factor in ensuring widespread adoption.
