Bengaluru Metro Plans Yellow Line Extension To Attibele

Bengaluru is considering extending its newly operational Yellow Line of the Metro network to Attibele, a stretch of nearly 12 kilometres, in a move aimed at decongesting the heavily burdened Hosur Road corridor and improving long-term mobility. Officials confirmed that a feasibility study has been commissioned to explore the extension, which could significantly ease commuter pressure on the city’s southern growth zone.

The Yellow Line, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, has already begun carrying close to 90,000 passengers daily since its opening. With many residential and industrial clusters lying beyond Bommasandra, transport experts say a further extension to Attibele would capture a wider commuter base and offer a cleaner alternative to the diesel-driven buses and private vehicles that dominate Hosur Road today.

Government representatives have directed Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to prepare a detailed feasibility report. Hyderabad-based consultants have been tasked with assessing routes, including possibilities via Jigani and Bannerghatta, to ensure maximum coverage and efficiency. The study is expected to also examine environmental impacts, land acquisition challenges and integration with existing transit systems. Urban mobility planners argue that the proposal reflects a broader demand for equitable and sustainable transport. The stretch towards Attibele houses thousands of daily wage workers, IT employees and industrial staff who often face two to three hours of daily travel due to bottlenecks on Hosur Road. A reliable Metro link, they believe, would reduce dependence on private cars, cut fuel emissions and significantly improve quality of life for commuters.

Experts also highlight the importance of forward-looking planning as Bengaluru prepares for new urban infrastructure, including a proposed stadium with a seating capacity of 90,000 in the same corridor. A Metro extension, they argue, would not only serve everyday commuters but also offer an eco-friendly transport backbone for large public gatherings and future developments. Critics, however, caution that feasibility studies must not become exercises in delay. Past Metro phases have suffered from extended gestation periods, cost escalations and challenges in land acquisition. For the project to deliver real relief, they say, timelines must be realistic, funding models transparent, and citizen engagement prioritised.

Despite these concerns, transport specialists believe extending the Yellow Line to Attibele could mark a pivotal moment in Bengaluru’s journey towards sustainable urbanisation. By reducing congestion, promoting eco-friendly mobility and addressing commuter equity, the project could serve as a model for how Indian cities balance growth with liveability. As the feasibility study begins, citizens and industry alike await clarity on timelines. For Bengaluru, the choice lies between continuing with incremental fixes or investing boldly in infrastructure that matches its global ambitions.
