A landslide near Marehanalli has forced the closure of Shiradi Ghat on National Highway 75, a key road linking Bengaluru with Mangaluru. As a result, traffic on this vital route has been suspended and vehicles are being rerouted via Charmadi and Sampaje roads. The landslide follows intense rainfall in the Malnad region, raising concerns over road safety and travel delays.
Shiradi Ghat, one of the most critical road corridors connecting the coastal city of Mangaluru with Bengaluru, is now temporarily shut to traffic. The disruption was caused by a landslide that occurred amid heavy monsoon rains in the Marehanalli area. Authorities have immediately enforced a travel ban on the ghat stretch to prevent further incidents and ensure commuter safety during the ongoing downpour.
Officials have advised travellers heading from Bengaluru to Mangaluru to take the Hassan-Beluru-Charmadi route, while those journeying from Mangaluru to Bengaluru are instructed to use either the Sampaje road or Charmadi Ghat as alternative routes. These diversions are expected to increase travel time significantly and authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution along the hilly terrain.
Locals and frequent travellers have expressed concern over recurring landslides during the monsoon season. Regular users of the Shiradi Ghat road say better preventive infrastructure, such as slope stabilisation measures and early warning systems, are needed to reduce the impact of natural disruptions. Experts note that the route, despite its scenic value, remains vulnerable to extreme weather every year.
In recent years, this stretch of NH 75 has seen periodic closures due to landslides and waterlogging.
