Bengaluru Launches Unlimited Weekly Pass for Vajra Bus User

Bengaluru’s transport authority has introduced a ₹750 weekly pass for commuters using the Vajra bus fleet, offering unlimited travel on Vajra, ordinary, and express BMTC buses—excluding airport services. Launched as part of efforts to ease congestion and boost public transit usage, the pass is available via the Tummoc mobile app. The new pass does not cover Vayu Vajra airport buses or other premium BMTC services. However, it marks a significant attempt by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to provide a cost-effective and tech-driven option for frequent riders. Toll charges continue to apply separately where relevant.

Officials from BMTC noted that the pass rollout coincides with heightened demand for public transport as congestion worsens. Unlimited travel on Kilometer-linked Vajra buses is expected to encourage commuters to shift away from private vehicles, helping reduce pollution and improve overall mobility in a city struggling with gridlocked roads. In a related update, BMTC has introduced a new non‑air‑conditioned feeder route—600‑A—connecting Banashankari and AECS Layout via Kudlu Gate, Bommanahalli, BTM Layout, and Ragigudda. Operating ten trips daily (five in each direction), this route enhances last-mile connectivity across densely populated neighbourhoods.

City planners said this dual initiative—fare innovation and network expansion—aligns with broader goals of equitable, low-carbon, and efficient urban mobility. The weekly pass model simplifies fare structures for regular users, while the new route addresses areas previously underserved by rapid transit. Travel behaviour experts welcomed the pass, noting that public transport adoption often hinges on affordability and convenience. A single ₹750 pass translates to under ₹110 per day for unlimited travel, making it competitive with ride-hailing and two-wheeler costs, particularly during peak-hour congestion.

Sustainability analysts argue that expanding affordable access to electric and clean-fuel buses can reduce carbon emissions. “Initiatives like the Vajra weekly pass can shift commuter preference from private vehicles to buses, lowering pollution and traffic stress,” said a transport economist. While the pass offers immediate appeal, officials emphasise ongoing improvements in service frequency and digital integration. Integration with Tummoc enables easy renewal, travel history access, and digital ticket validation—aligned with EMV-standard digital governance.

BMTC management also confirmed plans to monitor route performance and user feedback. If the route 600‑A performs well, similar feeder connections may be added across the city. Combined with the weekly pass, this approach improves access equity for women, senior citizens, and economically weaker sections who rely heavily on bus transit. Taken together, these developments reflect BMTC’s adaptive response to Bengaluru’s transport challenges. By combining fare innovation with local route expansion, the authority is strengthening public transit’s role in shaping a smart, inclusive, and environmentally responsible urban future.
