Bengaluru Iconic Majestic Bus Station Undergoes Major Makeover

In a significant boost to Bengaluru’s public transport infrastructure, the Kempegowda Bus Station, popularly known as Majestic, is set for a long-overdue revamp. Serving over six lakh commuters daily, the station is undergoing an extensive ₹3.5 crore renovation, jointly executed by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The transformation, which commenced on December 10, 2024, is slated for completion by May 2025. This marks the first major refurbishment of the terminal in a decade, addressing critical passenger concerns and infrastructure shortcomings. The project includes essential repairs, improved passenger amenities, and a strategic beautification plan aimed at enhancing commuter experience while ensuring seamless operations.

The renovation focuses on modernising existing infrastructure, including upgrading waiting lounges, refurbishing airport bus lounges, and overhauling restrooms to offer a more hygienic and commuter-friendly environment. The project is designed to ensure minimal disruption to daily transit, with BMTC overseeing pavement improvements, roofing enhancements, and platform upgrades. Meanwhile, BBMP is managing key road repairs around the terminal to streamline access for both public and private vehicles. Approximately ₹1.4 crore of the total budget has been allocated specifically for BMTC’s share of infrastructure improvements. The facelift also includes platform resurfacing, painting, and repairing worn-out roofs to provide a safer and more comfortable transit hub for passengers.

Beyond infrastructure, this redevelopment holds significant implications for sustainability and urban mobility. Given its strategic location on the former Dharmambudhi Lake site, adjacent to the KSRTC bus terminal and the Majestic Interchange of Namma Metro, the bus station plays a crucial role in Bengaluru’s multimodal transport system. The project aims to integrate sustainable urban mobility practices, such as improved pedestrian pathways and better traffic management, ensuring ease of movement for commuters. Experts highlight that investing in efficient public transport infrastructure can substantially reduce Bengaluru’s traffic congestion and environmental footprint, making mass transit more appealing compared to private vehicle usage.

From a civic perspective, the execution of this large-scale redevelopment without halting transport services underscores the city’s commitment to upgrading public facilities while maintaining operational efficiency. Lokesh M, Chief Engineer (Projects Central) at BBMP, confirmed that major road works around the bus station have been completed, including the concretisation of internal roads and footpath redevelopment. The remaining tasks include installing streetlights and final chamber works to enhance accessibility and safety. As Bengaluru continues to expand, projects like the Majestic Bus Station upgrade reflect a broader effort to create a sustainable and commuter-centric urban transport ecosystem.
