The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru’s civic body, is grappling with a significant financial gap as it seeks to recover property tax dues amounting to Rs 390 crore from more than 3.49 lakh property owners. Of this total, 1.73 lakh individuals are chronic defaulters who have avoided tax payments for multiple years, while the remaining 1.76 lakh have failed to pay for the current financial year. Despite extensive efforts to recover these dues, including repeated notices, SMS alerts, personal follow-ups, and even legal actions such as attachment notices, these defaulters continue to evade payment.

BBMP officials are frustrated by the persistent non-compliance and are taking a firmer stance in their attempts to address the issue. The ongoing deferrals of tax payment are a source of concern, especially as timely property tax collection is essential for the smooth functioning of the city’s civic infrastructure.
