Bengaluru Faces Dense Winter Fog Reducing Visibility To Fifty To Hundred Metres
Bengaluru is waking up to dense winter fog, with visibility dropping sharply to between 50 and 100 metres across several parts of the city. Calm winds, clear night skies, and falling temperatures have created ideal conditions for ground-level clouds, affecting early-morning commuters, road transport, and aviation services. Meteorologists warn that these conditions may persist for the next two weeks, posing challenges for daily travel and safety.
The dense fog in Bengaluru is significantly affecting city life, particularly during the early morning hours when visibility falls well below the winter average of 400–500 metres. Areas in the eastern, northern, and southern zones of the city are reported to be most affected, with low-lying neighbourhoods and city outskirts, where vegetation and open spaces are abundant, experiencing thicker fog. Commuters, two-wheeler riders, and morning walkers are encountering slower travel and heightened safety risks.A senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru explained that the sudden dip in night-time temperatures encourages moisture in the air to condense near the ground, forming dense fog. “Stable atmospheric conditions, low-level humidity, and clear skies over the past few days have created perfect conditions for fog formation,” the official said. Authorities have noted disruptions on major highways leading into the city, as well as potential delays in early-morning flights.
Traffic police and civic agencies are stepping up awareness campaigns to ensure safer commuting during these foggy conditions. Drivers are being advised to reduce speed, use headlights appropriately, and maintain safe distances to prevent accidents. Urban planners note that fog-related disruptions underscore the need for climate-resilient infrastructure and intelligent traffic management systems to safeguard citizens in increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.Despite the current chill, meteorologists predict a gradual rise in night-time temperatures over the next week. Southeasterly and easterly winds are expected to bring warmer air currents and moisture, increasing minimum temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius. “Night temperatures are likely to rise to 15–18 degrees Celsius before dipping slightly towards the end of December, offering temporary relief from severe cold,” the IMD official added.
