Bengaluru CONCOR to introduce 1000 tank containers for cement transport by rail

Bengaluru Container Corporation of India a subsidiary of Indian Railways is set to procure 1000 specialised tank containers to shift bulk cement transport from roadways to the railway network. This initiative aims to enhance logistics efficiency and support sustainable freight movement. The company has already acquired 90 such containers from Braithwaite a public sector unit under the Ministry of Railways.

For the first time CONCOR has operationalised these tank containers for transporting loose cement by rail. Operations have begun from My Home Cement Siding in Mellacheruvu Andhra Pradesh to CONCOR Inland Container Depot in Bengaluru.

This development is considered a significant step towards improving the country’s bulk logistics infrastructure. The tank containers are designed to move large quantities of cement safely and efficiently while lowering the environmental impact typically associated with road transport.

Recently CONCOR dispatched its first rake carrying 2199 tonnes of bulk cement from Maha Cement’s Mellacheruvu plant to ICD Whitefield in Bengaluru. The client was Hyderabad based My Home Cement.

These tank containers are expected to reduce losses from multiple handling decrease dependency on bagged road transport and cut the overall carbon footprint of cement logistics. Officials highlighted the importance of this shift in supporting the green and sustainable goals of the logistics sector.
