Bengaluru Citizens Mock Plan for INR 28 cr Precast Toilets

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to construct 46
precast toilets at a cost of INR 28.1 crore across Bengaluru. The toilets come
with a clean and dry facility, sensor-based flushing for urinals and water-saving
tap fixtures. They also come with a technique to eliminate bad odour, provide
ample ventilation and solar power lighting.

But citizens have questioned the inflated cost, many are mocking the BBMP
asking why they are spending INR 60 lakh to build and maintain a toilet for 5
years. The toilets are part of Phase- 2 of a project the civic agency took up two
years ago. Under Phase-1, 25 precast toilets were proposed to be built at a cost
of INR 16.8 crore, of which only 10 have been completed.

In light of concerns regarding the inflated costs, the BBMP Commissioner
emphasised on the transparency of the procurement process, the distinction
between budget provision and contractor payment.
