Bengaluru Cauvery Water Network Halted Today Following Critical Transmission Pipeline Damage

Bengaluru is witnessing a major water supply disruption today as a critical leak was detected in the Cauvery Stage-5 transmission pipeline. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has initiated emergency repairs, affecting multiple city localities from early morning until late evening. Authorities have urged residents to store water in advance and use it judiciously, as the temporary halt is essential to prevent further leakage and ensure long-term stability of the city’s Cauvery water network.

The BWSSB reported that a 3,000 mm diameter transmission pipeline suffered significant damage to a screw valve, resulting in a large-scale water leak. In response, teams were immediately deployed to carry out urgent maintenance work, which is expected to continue from 7 am to 10 pm. Officials emphasised that the disruption is unavoidable and necessary to safeguard the integrity of Bengaluru’s primary water supply system.City residents across several localities, including Ananthapura, Doddabettahalli, Chikkabettahalli, Harohalli, Kenchanahalli, Govindapura, Vasudevapura, Manchenahalli, Kattigenahalli, Srinivasapura, Bellahalli, Thirumenahalli, and Chokkanahalli, will experience interrupted water distribution. Suburban and outer areas such as Thanisandra, Horamavu Agara, Kadubeesanahalli, Ullal Sonnenahalli, Turahalli, Ambalipura, Begur, and Bellandur are also affected, reflecting the extensive reach of the Cauvery network and its critical role in Bengaluru’s water security.

A senior BWSSB official explained that repairing the pipeline is essential to prevent further water loss and to restore stable supply for the long term. “The Cauvery Stage-5 line forms a backbone for the city’s water distribution. Addressing leaks promptly is crucial to maintain uninterrupted service for households and businesses alike,” the official said.Urban planners highlighted that the incident underscores the need for resilient and decentralised water infrastructure in rapidly growing cities. Integrating preventive maintenance, advanced leak detection systems, and alternative water sources can mitigate the impact of such disruptions. “Bengaluru’s dependence on a single transmission network makes it vulnerable. Smart planning and investment in localised supply solutions are key to sustainable urban water management,” an infrastructure expert noted.

Residents have been advised to ration stored water and avoid non-essential usage until repairs are completed. Experts also recommend adopting water conservation measures, such as rainwater harvesting and efficient household storage, to reduce pressure on the municipal network. The BWSSB has committed to closely monitoring the affected areas and expediting restoration work. While the disruption poses temporary challenges for households and businesses, authorities stress that coordinated infrastructure management is vital to ensuring long-term water security, equitable access, and sustainable urban living in Bengaluru.
