Bengaluru Auto Fares Set to Rise After Transport Hikes
Bengaluru auto fares are set to rise in the wake of recent transport fare hikes. Following a 15 percent increase in bus fares by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and a 71 percent surge in metro travel charges, auto-rickshaw drivers are now demanding a fare revision to offset rising operational costs.
Currently, auto fares in Bengaluru start at Rs 30 for the first two kilometres, with an additional Rs 15 for every extra kilometre. This fare structure has been in place since December 2021, but with the recent hike in public transport fares, auto drivers are pushing for a rise in their rates as well.
Several auto unions are requesting a fare increase, with some calling for Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilometre, while others suggest a minimum fare of Rs 40 and Rs 20 per additional kilometre. The drivers argue that with the rising cost of LPG, vehicle maintenance, and day-to-day expenses, the current fare structure is no longer sufficient to cover their costs.
However, there is some opposition to the hike.
Certain unions believe that an increase in auto fares could make them less competitive compared to more affordable options like buses and cabs (Ola and Uber).
In response to these concerns, officials from the traffic and transport department held a meeting with auto unions to discuss the issue. Authorities have stated that it will take about a week to finalise the new fare structure, pending approval from the concerned officers.
While the auto fare revision is still being deliberated, commuters in Bengaluru should brace themselves for potential fare hikes in the near future. With the cost of public transportation on the rise, the city will need to ensure a balance between the operational needs of auto drivers and the affordability of fares for everyday commuters.
