Bengaluru autorickshaw fares within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits are set to increase from August 1, 2025. The city’s transport authorities announced this revision, which raises the minimum fare for the first two kilometres to Rs 36, up from the previous Rs 30. For every subsequent kilometre, the fare will now be Rs 18, an increase of Rs 3 from the earlier rate. This adjustment, replacing the fare structure in place since November 2021, follows persistent demands from auto rickshaw drivers and their unions, citing rising operational costs including fuel prices, maintenance, and general inflation.
The revised fare structure also includes updated provisions for waiting and luggage charges. The first five minutes of waiting time will remain free, with a charge of Rs 10 for every subsequent 15 minutes of additional wait. For passenger baggage, up to 20 kilograms will be carried free, with an additional Rs 10 levied for every 20 kilograms thereafter, though the maximum limit cannot exceed 50 kilograms. Night-time fares, applicable between 10 pm and 5 am, will be set at 1.5 times the normal fare.
Transport authorities have directed that the original approved fare list must be prominently displayed in every autorickshaw to ensure transparency for commuters. Furthermore, all autorickshaw meters are mandated to be re-verified and stamped to reflect the revised rates by October 31, 2025. This revision marks the first fare increase since November 2021, prior to which the fares were last adjusted in 2013, highlighting the infrequent nature of such reviews in the city.
This fare adjustment aims to balance driver livelihoods with commuter affordability, reflecting the evolving urban transport landscape. It highlights the ongoing challenge of managing public transport costs in a rapidly growing metropolitan area, impacting daily mobility for thousands.
