Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru has launched India’s most extensive electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure tailored for airside operations. This pioneering initiative underscores the airport’s commitment to sustainability and positions it as a leader in green aviation infrastructure.
Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) has partnered with Servotech Renewable Power System Limited to develop a state-of-the-art EV charging hub within the airport’s premises. The facility is designed to support the airport’s fleet of electric buses, which transport passengers between terminals and aircraft, thereby reducing carbon emissions and enhancing operational efficiency. The charging hub comprises ten ultra-fast direct current (DC) chargers, each with a capacity of 240 kW, totaling an impressive 2.4 megawatts. This setup ensures rapid turnaround times for the electric buses, facilitating seamless airside operations. The installation is the first of its kind in India, specifically engineered to meet the unique demands of airport airside environments.
Servotech is responsible for the end-to-end implementation of the charging infrastructure, including equipment procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and a five-year maintenance contract. This comprehensive approach ensures the longevity and reliability of the charging stations, aligning with BIAL’s long-term sustainability goals. The deployment of this EV charging hub aligns with BIAL’s broader environmental objectives, aiming to significantly reduce transportation-related carbon emissions across airport operations. By enabling continuous electric vehicle operations for critical airside transport functions, the facility supports both operational efficiency and ecological responsibility.
This initiative sets a new benchmark for sustainable aviation infrastructure development across India. As airports nationwide evaluate electrification strategies, this installation serves as a comprehensive model for integrating high-capacity EV charging systems into complex operational environments.
