The air connectivity of North Karnataka is set for a major boost as Belagavi Airport adds two more destinations to its flight map. IndiGo Airlines has announced new direct flights connecting Belagavi with Mumbai and Hyderabad, strengthening the city’s position as an emerging aviation hub in southern India.
According to airline officials, both routes will operate daily, offering greater flexibility and convenience for travellers, especially business commuters. The schedule for the Belagavi–Hyderabad route is expected soon, while the Mumbai service will complement the existing flight operated by Star Air.The addition of these two new connections marks a milestone in Belagavi’s growing integration with India’s major business and technology centres. The city already enjoys direct links to Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. With IndiGo’s latest expansion, passengers will have access to six key destinations without the need for stopovers.
Officials from the regional airport authority noted that this move will help decongest nearby hubs like Hubballi and Goa, while improving accessibility for local industries, small businesses, and academic institutions that rely on fast connectivity to metro cities. The Belagavi–Mumbai route, in particular, has seen a steady surge in demand from business travellers and SMEs due to the city’s expanding manufacturing and service base.
Experts from the civil aviation sector believe IndiGo’s move aligns with the broader push for decentralised regional connectivity under India’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. Belagavi’s strategic location on the Bengaluru–Pune corridor, coupled with robust highway and rail access, makes it a natural choice for such expansions.A senior aviation analyst explained that increased regional air links also have strong sustainability implications. “By reducing dependency on long road travel, such regional flights can help cut vehicular emissions and promote more efficient transport networks, especially when combined with the government’s vision of zero-emission airports,” the expert said.
Industry watchers say the new services are expected to strengthen tourism and trade ties between Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. With Hyderabad’s growing IT base and Mumbai’s role as India’s financial capital, the connections offer immense potential for professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors alike.Belagavi Airport, managed by the Airports Authority of India, has seen consistent passenger growth since its modernisation in recent years. The new routes are likely to enhance the airport’s utilisation and further support its case for expanded infrastructure. As Belagavi positions itself as a regional growth centre, improved air connectivity plays a key role in ensuring equitable development beyond metropolitan clusters. The latest move by IndiGo signals growing confidence in smaller cities as viable aviation markets that can balance economic growth with sustainability.
