Bengaluru’s urban landscape is set for a significant transformation with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) investing ₹9.45 crore in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an ambitious 18-km tunnel road project. Stretching between Hebbal and Silk Board Junction, this project aims to address one of the city’s most pressing issues traffic congestion.
The decision to allocate such a substantial amount for the DPR underscores the complexity and significance of the tunnel road initiative. This expenditure is notable, especially when compared to the DPR costs for similar projects. For instance, Namma Metro’s DPR for the 37-km Sarjapur-Hebbal line cost just ₹1.58 crore, highlighting a stark contrast in project budgeting. Rodic Consultants Pvt Ltd, which has been awarded the DPR contract, was the sole bidder after the BBMP rejected a second bid. This decision followed a detailed review process, with BBMP initially estimating the DPR cost at ₹15 crore. Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath defended the higher cost, emphasising the unique challenges associated with this first-of-its-kind project for Bengaluru.
The tunnel road project is a key component of the city’s strategy to decongest its traffic-clogged roads. The initiative, championed by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, aims to provide a smooth, uninterrupted route between the city’s northern and southern sectors. This infrastructure development is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and improve overall urban mobility. BBMP’s investment in the DPR reflects a broader commitment to modernising Bengaluru’s infrastructure. Early this year, the BBMP had already spent ₹4.7 crore on an infrastructure plan to tackle traffic congestion, further demonstrating its proactive approach to urban planning.
The project’s high DPR cost also highlights the need for careful planning and expert consultation in large-scale infrastructure projects. As Bengaluru continues to grow, such investments are crucial in ensuring that new developments meet the city’s evolving needs. For local residents, the tunnel road project promises relief from daily traffic jams and a more efficient commuting experience. As the BBMP prepares to invite tenders for the civil work, the focus will be on securing adequate funding and ensuring the project’s successful execution.
